BFA:THESIS

Letterpress is undergoing a nostalgic revival in the West, resonating in the tactile imperfection of its visual quality. However, few designers have embraced letterpress
--wood type in particular-- as a technique applied with Arabic typography.

This presents an opportunity to research the imperfection that results from attempting to break apart the Arabic script into physical components resulting in a rejuvenated visual form. This thesis explores the behavior of Arabic letterforms as a process but also engages Arabic typography as a visual element in this procedure.

As part of this endeavor, a set of Arabic physical typographic systems are presented in a collection of contemporary prints developed using a self-built printing press.
